Petitions

Recently I received a mailing from the National Pro-Life Alliance, under the imprimatur of Congressman Steven King, asking me to sign a petition urging  passage of a law called "The Life at Conception Act" to grant personhood to a fetus at conception. This would negate the Roe v. Wade decision since fetuses would then be protected under the Fouteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. this noble cause is one that is close to my heart so, of course, I signed the petitions.
There was also a request for a contribution which puzzled me. It would seem to me that since the congress is mostly pro-life all that would be necessary would be to introduce the bill and it would pass easily.
The request for a contribution troubled me since my puzzlement aside I am unable to make any contributions however worthy the cause. This prompted me to write a letter which I included with my signed petitions. the letter is reproduced below.

"Rep. Steve King

Sir:

Enclosed are my signed petitions. Abolishing abortion has been a priority of mine for many years. I have written numerous articles in local newspapers describing the horrors of this savage practice. My question to you is why did it take thirty-three years and over 45 million dead babies for this law to be proposed.

I supposed members of congress were too busy voting themselves pay increases at three in the morning to bother with such a trivial matter as the slaughter of the unborn. That is until you voted yourselves automatic increases a few years ago. This is in contrast to minimum wage workers who have to beg for an increase only to have it defeated because the estate tax which was included in the bill.

Unfortunately, I am unable to financially support this noble, if belated, cause. My wife has a chronic disease which requires very expensive medication. This drain on our finances might have been avoided if congress had passed a law to require that Americans pay no more for medication than people in foreign countries pay. Most of these medications are the result of research by American pharmaceutical companies, quite often with government financial assistance, but Americans pay far more for medication than people in other countries do. Once again Americans are stuck with the bill.

In addition, the high cost of fuel is not only driving up the cost of transportation it is also making everything else more expensive. The inaction of congress in not opening our off-shore and North Slope oil deposits to development has left us at the mercy of foreign oil producing countries. I hope congress won't wait thirty-three years to do something in this regard.

I don't mean to put the blame for all of this on your shoulders, Mr. King, but our government has neglected the welfare of the average American for far too long.

I hope this will change in the future. That is if we have one."

A day after I mailed this letter President Bush announced that we were sending hundreds of millions of dollars to repair the damage in Lebanon. Once again the American taxpayer gets stuck with the bill.

This makes me FURIOUS!!
