NAFTA has recently come up in the race for the Democrat presidential nomination. Obama says Hillary is partially responsible for this treaty and the resultant loss of American jobs. Hillary says if she is elected she will attempt to modify this agreement to make it more equitable for the United States.
All I can say about this is that before NAFTA we had a trade surplus with Mexico and now we have a trade deficit with Mexico. To me the answer is to go back to the pre-NAFTA status and try to regain out trade surplus.
Which brings up the subject of all the various international trade agreements entered into by our government.
Every one of them has worked out to our detriment.
Cheap goods from China and other third world countries have flooded our markets. It's a good way to hold down inflation but on balance bad for the average American.
Our textile industry is now almost non-existent.
Our steel industry is a pale shadow of what it once was.
Our big three auto makers are in danger of going the way of Nash and Studebaker.
The dumb-asses in Washington do nothing to help this situation. They are too busy kow-towing to their special interest campaign contributors.
We should put pressure on the dumb-asses to get us out of these foreign entanglements and begin running our own trade policies again instead of having foreign bureaucrats in Brussels telling us what we can and can't do.
The globalists will scream that this is isolationism. That's baloney. We can still deal with the rest of the world only we'll do it on our own terms. We were involved in international trade before we became involved in these trade agreements and we had trade surpluses with most other countries. Since joining these pacts we have become the world's greatest debtor while running multi-billion dollar deficits every year. Mostly with countries that are our enemies. (China, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, etc.)
We defeated the abominable Amnesty for illegal aliens bill by a grassroots protest. We can get out of these trade agreements by the same means. Let's demand that the dumb-asses restore the sovereignty they ceded by entering into these agreements. Write, phone, email and fax your representatives and demand that they do the will of the people or they might have to get a real job.
