Congress in it's usual ham-handed fashion has embarked on a course to revamp the entire health care system of the United States. Judging by past performance this is the worst course that could be taken for the large majority of the American people.
What should be done is to take reform in easy stages instead of trying to solve a myriad of problems all at once. Especially considering that most members of Congress have difficulty chewing gum and walking at the same time.
First we need tort reform. Doctors must be shielded from frivolous lawsuits which drive up the cost of malpractice insurance and the cost of practicing medicine. At the same time victims of real malpractice must be protected. Of course getting the lawyers in Congress to enact such a law would be a huge undertaking.But public outrage stopped the amnesty for illegal aliens and could also force passage of tort reform.
Second, buyers must be allowed to purchase insurance across state lines. This will finally introduce true competition into the health insurance field.
Third, Illegal aliens must be rounded up and deported. It is estimated that in 2004 it cost the taxpayers of California
$10.5 Billion in medical care, education expenses and to incarcerate illegal alien criminals. We must also stop the practice of alien women coming across the border to have their babies in American hospitals. In addition to the cost to American taxpayers the baby is an American citizen and under present law and can be the anchor to bring in the rest of the family.The law must be changed so that babies born to illegal aliens are not automatically American citizens.
That should be enough to start with. We should see significant benefits if these proposals are enacted into law. Considering Congress' abysmal record they'll probably screw up at least half of this and have to do it over again. Let's hope practice makes perfect.
